Sturgeon Bay was settled in 1835 and has seen many changes over the years. Much of the city's history has been preserved. The Door County Historical Museum displays artifacts left by the first known humans on the peninsula. The Door County Maritime Museum brings the county's long shipbuilding history to life even as new ships and boats are built and repaired.

The waterfront and historical districts have been transformed over the years to include restaurants, shops, galleries, museums and theaters, which provide a variety of cultural experiences.

Many marinas, boat ramps, beaches, and parks are available on the Sturgeon Bay shoreline. Sturgeon Bay is Door County's year-round community with small town friendliness.
